Campus
The Hermitages of the Priestly Heart of Jesus are on 65 acres of land. The hermitages and chapel are nestled in 40 acres of mature hardwood forest, bordering 25 acres of field. The dedicated acreage shares a campus with the Missionaries of the Word Motherhouse and is visibly demarcated, both by the contours of the land, with a ridge dividing the property and also a simple post and chain fence so the areas are easy to distinguish. The remaining sides of the property border fields used by local family farms.
Door County
The hermitages are built in the heart of Door County, an area known for its natural beauty. The small towns throughout the peninsula can be quite busy, especially in the summer but the hermitages and grounds are bordered completely by farm fields. Priests are welcome to enjoy longer walks or runs on the rural roads in the surrounding area. There are also bikes available in the summer and snowshoes and cross country skis available in the winter for leisure. Maps of the local area will be in each hermitage for reference.
Accessibility
The hermitages are intentionally designed to give priests a sense of space and solitude. Each hermitage has an individual parking space at the end of the sidewalk to their hermitage. Priests are encouraged to walk between their hermitage and the chapel but cars may be used as needed. We ask that priests with mobility concerns please check with the community before scheduling a retreat. If scheduling a retreat in winter, please prepare for the colder weather and winter conditions.
Our nearest hospital and pharmacy is in Sturgeon Bay, WI, 30 minutes south of the Hermitages. The nearest small grocery is in Egg Harbor, a 5 minute drive from the campus.
